Blackened Cigars is a relatively new premium cigar brand, created as a collaboration between Drew Estate—a renowned cigar manufacturer—and Blackened American Whiskey, a company co-founded by Metallica's lead guitarist, James Hetfield, and master distiller Rob Dietrich. The cigars are part of a crossover effort between the worlds of cigars, whiskey, and music, blending passion from each area to create a unique smoking experience. The first release, the Blackened M81 Maduro by Drew Estate, made its debut in 2022. The "M81" refers to Metallica's founding year (1981), while the Maduro name highlights the cigar's dark and oily wrapper. This cigar is entirely made from Maduro tobacco, including the wrapper, binder, and filler, delivering a deep, rich smoking experience. The blend is composed of a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, a Broadleaf binder, and Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Broadleaf fillers. Flavor-wise, Blackened cigars are known for their bold, robust profiles, offering notes of espresso, dark chocolate, leather, and earthy spices. The combination of Drew Estate’s craftsmanship and Hetfield's creative input ensures the cigars cater to both hardcore cigar aficionados and Metallica fans alike. During Intertabac 2024 in Dortmund, I made a short video with Cagdas Cildir in the Oliva booth. We talked about some of Oliva's limited editions. Oliva Cigar Company is one of the most respected names in the premium cigar industry. It is known for producing high-quality handmade cigars. The company was founded by the Oliva family, which has been involved in growing tobacco for generations. Their roots in the tobacco industry can be traced back to Cuba, where the family grew tobacco before moving to Nicaragua in the 1960s following the Cuban Revolution. Oliva cigars are crafted primarily in Nicaragua, which is renowned for its fertile soil and ideal conditions for growing rich, flavorful tobacco. The company offers a wide range of cigars, with some of its most popular lines including the Serie V, Serie G, and Serie O. The Serie V Melanio in particular has garnered international acclaim, winning multiple awards, including Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado. Oliva’s cigars are typically characterized by their rich, complex flavor profiles, ranging from medium to full-bodied, with smooth smoking experiences. They use a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos for their fillers, often combined with wrappers from various regions, such as Ecuador or Cameroon, offering a wide array of taste experiences. The company was acquired by J. Cortès, a Belgian family-owned cigar business, in 2016, but it continues to operate independently while expanding its global presence. Oliva has built a strong reputation among cigar enthusiasts for its consistency, craftsmanship, and dedication to quality. InterTabac is the world's largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking accessories, held annually in Dortmund, Germany. It brings together manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and industry professionals from all over the globe. The exhibition features a wide range of products, including cigars, cigarettes, pipes, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and other related smoking paraphernalia.

Drew Estate has announced a new cigar that will only be sold in stores outside the U.S. In this video, I talk with Pedro Gomez about the Undercrown 10 Flying Pig. Flying Pig cigars are a highly sought-after and unique offering from Drew Estate, renowned for their distinct shape and blend. They are part of several of Drew Estate's premium cigar lines. Flying Pig cigars are easily recognized for their short, stubby, and perfecto shape. The perfecto vitola is inspired by old-school Cuban cigar-making styles, adding an element of craftsmanship and rarity. Blend-wise, it uses the standard Undercrown 10 blend: a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a Connecticut broadleaf binder and Brazilian mata fina and Cuban-seed Nicaraguan fillers. Like all other Flying Pig cigars, it measures 3 15/16 x 60 and has a coiled cap.
